Why We Place German Shepherds and No Other Breed
Every breed on a buyer's shortlist can be trained to protect. The more useful question is what each breed's standard actually asks the dog to do.
The Belgian Malinois, which the FCI lists as the Belgian Shepherd Dog, is described in its standard as "the stubborn and keen protector of its owner." The Doberman standard asks for "medium temperament and medium sharpness (alertness)," and the Rottweiler standard for a dog "good-natured, placid in basic disposition, very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work.
The German Shepherd's own standard names the full range of roles in a single sentence. FCI-Standard N° 166 records the breed as a "versatile working, herding and service dog" and requires "instinctive behavior, resilience and self-assurance in order to be suitable as a companion, guard, protection, service and herding dog." What the Working Line Means in Your Home
One written standard, two breeding directions. For decades some breeders have selected German Shepherds for the show ring, where the dog's build and movement usually carry the most weight. Others have selected for the work itself: nerve under pressure and the willingness to keep working when the work stops being interesting. Neither line is a separate breed; both are populations of the same one.
You can often see the split before anyone explains it: a working line dog's back usually stays straighter, and his coat is more often sable or solid black than the tan-and-black saddle most Americans picture.
What matters more is the part a photograph never shows. A working line dog is not a more aggressive dog; he has more appetite for work, and what makes him livable is his threshold, the point where tolerance ends and a reaction begins. We select for that threshold, which is why the doorbell, visiting cousins and a loud kitchen read as ordinary household noise rather than something to answer.
That still asks something of the household, and the American Kennel Club says it plainly: "It is not a good idea to buy an active dog breed unless you already lead an active lifestyle." Where a working line dog overwhelms a family, that is a failure of selection rather than a trait of the line. What the Titles Test, and the Standard Behind Our Dogs
Buyers are told to ask what a pedigree is worth, but not what the titles on it measure. Two things are useful to know before you talk to any seller.
The first is SVV3, the top level of the Slovak working trial, which judges tracking, obedience and protection work. A dog who holds it has completed all three.
The second is the breed survey, the certificate a Shepherd needs before he may be bred inside the German SV system or under its American affiliate. Appearance alone does not earn it: the survey asks for a working title, a temperament test, an endurance test, a conformation rating, and certified hips and elbows. A Slovak dog is assessed by his own country's national association instead, and its requirements are the ones our breeding has to meet.
Where that evidence is published for our own dogs, it documents the mother: a dam who is a Slovak national champion holding SVV3. We name the mother because that is what we can document, and we will not claim what the papers do not say.
A title describes a parent; what the dog himself can do is settled before he is offered. What arrives at your door is a finished dog, not a project. That means complete obedience on and off leash, settled house manners, and protection work tested against real behavior rather than a rehearsed routine on a sport field. Our dogs are tested in real environments – houses, cars, crowds, unfamiliar streets. Our training method page shows what a session looks like. All of that training follows one standard.
That standard comes from Peter's own record: nine years at Leopoldov, Slovakia's high-security prison, where he ran the prison's own working-dog program and completed leadership-level training in narcotics detection, and four more years as a trainer and decoy for police and sport dogs. Hips, Elbows, Size, Lifespan
Health, Structure, and What We Will Not Promise
The breed has a reputation for hip and elbow problems, and it is a fair question to ask us. We answer it twice: once in the dogs we breed from, and again in every dog before he travels. The section "How a Dog Gets Into Our Program" lists what a breeding dog has to pass first.
On size and lifespan, the American Kennel Club records 65 to 90 pounds and 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder for males, with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.
What we offer is a specific promise about defects present at birth rather than a lifetime health guarantee, and it is listed in the Standards & Guarantees section on this page. The hip and elbow question is answered before that promise is ever needed: by the X-rays a breeding dog has to pass, and again by the X-rays every dog goes through before he travels. A dog is a living animal, not a machine – no honest trainer will pretend otherwise.

How a Dog Gets Into Our Program
We breed only from dogs that meet the breeding requirements of SÚCHNO, the Slovak German Shepherd association: a working trial, a show rating, hip and elbow X-rays graded no worse than the second degree, and a completed breed survey, which judges how the dog behaves around strangers and whether he stays calm when a shot is fired. From each litter we keep only a small share of the puppies, and those grow up in the families of our own breeders. At 12 months, after temperament, genetic and health testing, they continue their training in Peter's household and in the households of his trainers. That is why we place no more than 12 dogs a year.

Slovakia has bred working German Shepherds for generations. We select almost exclusively from Slovak working lines, with the occasional standout dog from a neighboring European program.
