Living With a Protection Dog in an Apartment Building
Every dog we place is a German Shepherd, and an apartment building asks something different of him than a house does. A house gives a dog somewhere to be alone, while an apartment building gives him a hallway, a shared elevator and a lobby he crosses several times a day, always among people he has never seen before.
This is a temperament question before it is a training question, because what settles it is the dog's threshold, the point where tolerance ends and a reaction begins. What you want is high drive paired with an equally high threshold, and that combination is what we select when the dog is going to an apartment.
Our dogs are tested in real environments – houses, cars, crowds, unfamiliar streets. Every dog leaves us fully trained, and that means complete obedience on and off leash, settled house manners, and protection work tested against real behavior rather than a rehearsed routine on a sport field.

What New York City Requires of Guard Dog Owners
In New York City a guard dog is any dog trained to protect people or places and to bark, threaten or bite, and that definition covers private owners as well as businesses. The city requires a Guard Dog Registration, a New York City Dog License, a microchip, two tags on the collar (the license tag and a "Guard Dog" tag), a rabies vaccination, and a warning sign from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at any place where the dog is kept. If the dog is lost or stolen, or if he changes owner, you have five days to tell the Department, and you renew both licenses every year. Failing to meet these requirements can result in a $1,000 fine.
These obligations belong to the dog's owner, and the rules above are the ones New York City publishes for the five boroughs. We summarize them because a buyer should know them before the dog arrives rather than after, and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene remains the authority on the current requirements.
