The Bureau of Justice Statistics counted 8.2 burglaries for every 1,000 households in its 2024 victimization survey. The most common type of burglar is a novice, and a Department of Justice guide on burglary of single-family houses says novices "can be easily deterred by dogs, alarms or locks."
The same guide is specific about the dog itself: "A dog's presence is a close substitute for human occupancy, and most burglars avoid houses with dogs."

What a Dog Does Not Do
A dog does not replace a perimeter system. A study of 595 block groups in Columbus, Ohio, found fewer burglaries where more households kept dogs. For street crime the same study credits the people who walk the dogs, and only where residents already trust each other, so a dog at home is one part of what that study measured, not all of it.
Training has honest limits as well. In FCI protection sport a dog may grip only the padded sleeve, and a bite on an unprotected part of the helper means immediate disqualification, so a sport title says little on its own about life in a house. A dog is a living animal, not a machine – no honest trainer will pretend otherwise.
