Fully Trained Adult Dogs, Selected in Person

A Plain Definition First

What a Family Protection Dog Is, and Is Not

A family protection dog is a trained adult dog that lives inside your home as an ordinary companion and does protection work on his handler's command. He is not a yard dog: he protects the people in the house rather than the perimeter around it, and the difference is explained on our trained guard dogs page.

Slovak Protection Dogs USA is an American company with its own training center in Slovakia.

Wero has become a beloved part of our family calm, loyal, and trustworthy, even with our 11 years old son.

The Age of the Child

A Toddler and a Teenager Need Different Dogs

Families ask whether our dogs are good with children, and the honest answer depends on which child: a two-year-old and a sixteen-year-old give a dog two different jobs.

A toddler moves without warning and grabs whatever is in front of him, so a dog in that house needs a very high threshold; the threshold is the point where tolerance ends and a reaction begins, and drive is his appetite for work. What you want is high drive paired with an equally high threshold, so that the doorbell, visiting cousins and a loud kitchen read as ordinary household noise rather than something to answer. A teenager asks for something else: a dog that takes a command from a sixteen-year-old as readily as from a parent.

Our dogs come of age in Slovak family households, surrounded by children – two-year-olds underfoot, teenagers looking for a running partner. Neither hostility nor shyness belongs in a house with children, and the breed standard is written the same way: the AKC describes the breed's expression as "direct and fearless, but not hostile," and the standard says that deficiencies in character which indicate shyness must be "penalized as very serious faults.

Ordinary Weeks, Not Emergencies

Guests, Birthday Parties, and the Babysitter

The threat a protection dog is bought for may never arrive; what does arrive is an ordinary Saturday: six children in the backyard, the plumber at the door, and the babysitter who comes while you are out.

Our dogs are tested in real environments – houses, cars, crowds, unfamiliar streets. By the time a dog is offered to anyone, he has proven himself around children, guests, and household pets. What we select for is not indifference but composure: a dog that registers who came in, accepts your signal that the visitor belongs there, and settles.

Your trainer shows your household how to introduce him to a guest and what to do when the doorbell rings during a party. Our training method page explains how a dog is prepared for a house with guests in it.

What Living With the Dog Actually Looks Like

What arrives at your door is a finished dog, not a project. That means complete obedience on and off leash, settled house manners, and protection work tested against real behavior rather than a rehearsed routine on a sport field.

He sleeps indoors, and we ask you to give him a place near the family rather than by the door. He needs one adult who can handle him without hesitation, and a household that agrees on the rules; a dog given contradictory instructions will follow none of them.

Working line dogs usually need work and a routine. Keeping him sharp is short, consistent daily work that we show you in your own home, not a second job. We allow a full month for settling in, and Peter is reachable through all of it. A dog is a living animal, not a machine – no honest trainer will pretend otherwise.

Slovakia has bred working German Shepherds for generations. Peter's record as a trainer there is on his about page. We select almost exclusively from Slovak working lines, with the occasional standout dog from a neighboring European program.

We breed only from dogs that pass the working trial, the show rating, the hip and elbow X-rays and the breed survey required by SÚCHNO, the Slovak German Shepherd association, and we keep only a small share of each litter. The puppies we keep grow up in the families of our own breeders. At 12 months, once they have passed temperament, genetic and health testing, they continue in the households of Peter and the trainers who work with him. That is why we place no more than 12 dogs a year.

What the Authorities Actually Say

What Veterinary and Health Authorities Say About Dogs and Children

The American Veterinary Medical Association makes no exception for a dog of known temperament: "Always supervise young children when around dogs, no matter how well behaved either are." The CDC adds that the same supervision applies to your own family pet, and we make no exception either. The AVMA also suggests waiting until children are older than four before bringing a new dog home. That is a judgment for your family and your own veterinarian to make rather than one we make for you, and a household with a toddler is the placement we examine most closely.

The research points away from breed as well: a JAVMA study of 256 dog bite–related fatalities in the United States found that the deaths shared a set of preventable circumstances and that "breed was not one of these." A 2022 study in Science found that breed explains just 9 percent of the differences in behavior between individual dogs.

Children have to learn the dog's signals too, and the ASPCA lists what an anxious or frightened dog looks like: a lowered head, repeated lip licking, a tucked tail, flattened ears, and yawning.

From Slovakia to Your Door

We place dogs across the United States.

Every dog travels with an FCI-recognized pedigree, full veterinary and travel certificates, and the CDC import paperwork in order before he boards.

A master trainer from our team flies with your dog from Slovakia to your home, and stays to settle him into your routine and coach the adults who will handle him.

Before you commit, you meet your dog on a live video call from Slovakia and see exactly who is coming. Every dog undergoes health and genetic screening before travel, arrives with up to two years of coverage for congenital defects, and is backed by our 90-day guarantee and lifetime support.

Households that travel often have a page of their own: executive protection dogs
