An American Company. One Tradition, Two Countries.
Czech and Slovak German Shepherds
Buyers who hear "Czech line" usually assume it names a separate breed, when it actually names a state breeding program that ran in a country which no longer exists. Slovak Protection Dogs USA is an American company with its own training center in Slovakia, and every dog we place is a trained adult, selected there in person and delivered to your home.

Where the Czech Line Actually Comes From
There was never a Czech state breeding tradition standing alongside a Slovak one. There was a single Czechoslovak state program, run by the border guard, which set up its own breeding kennels at the border brigades in the 1950s. By the end of the seventies the supply came from four of them: three at the brigades in Cheb, Domažlice and Bratislava, and one at the handlers' school in Libějovice.
Bratislava, then as now, is in Slovakia, and because all four kennels bred to one standard for one service, the pedigrees run across two countries today. The program ended with the border service in the early 1990s, and the split of the state in 1993 left those pedigrees divided.
That one program is why "Czech line" and "Slovak line" point back to the same working stock. Neither label was ever about the show ring, a distinction the breed's founders drew in its first written standard in 1899: "A pleasing appearance is desirable, but it cannot put the dog's working ability into question."

Czech, DDR, West German: What the Labels Mean
Europe kept several working traditions alive, and you will hear all of them named as though they were separate breeds. They are populations of one breed, shaped by who bred them and what they had to do.
The Czech border-patrol lines are the program described above, and the kennel name you will still find on their pedigrees is z Pohraniční stráže. The DDR lines came out of a parallel East German program, run by its own breeding association from the early 1950s until reunification in 1990, with the same deliberate bias toward service ability over appearance. The West German working lines grew up alongside the show branch and came to define themselves against it.
A label on paper tells you which population a dog descends from, but nothing about whether this particular animal has the nerves to live in your house.

What This Means for the Dog You Actually Get
Peter has worked inside the tradition behind the Slovak working lines since 1999, nine of those years with the prison K9 unit at Leopoldov. We select almost exclusively from Slovak working lines, with the occasional standout dog from a neighboring European program.
What that looks like on a pedigree is concrete rather than romantic. Two of the dogs with us right now, one on the roster and one still in training, have mothers who are Slovak national champions and hold SVV3, the top level of the Slovak working trial, which judges tracking, obedience under gunfire and protection work. Buying a dog whose mother was proven against that standard is not a gamble.
So compare what was tested, not what was labeled: ask which trials the parents passed, ask to watch the dog work, and ask whoever is selling him whether he watched it himself. The pedigree of any dog we offer is available on request, and you are welcome to take it to anyone you trust before you choose from the roster.
