Schutzhund (IGP): The Sport Behind Trained Protection Dogs

Schutzhund, or SchH on a pedigree, is the older name for the sport behind the IGP titles you see on European German Shepherds. Much of what is published about it predates the current rules: the stick hits left the protection phase in 2023, and the detail people repeat most often no longer describes the sport. Here is what the titles measure, and where they stop.
What Schutzhund Is, and Why the Paperwork Says IGP
Schutzhund, German for "protection dog," is the original name of a three-part sport born in Germany. United Schutzhund Clubs of America (USCA), one of the American clubs that run it, calls the sport a breed evaluation test built for the German Shepherd Dog: "As a working trial, Schutzhund measures the dog's mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability."
Older pedigrees carry IPO titles. Since 2019 the rulebook has used IGP, short for international utility dog trial. Handlers still say Schutzhund.
The Three Phases of a Schutzhund Trial
A trial is one dog, one day, three phases, each worth 100 points. USCA calls it "a triathlon for dogs."
Tracking
The dog follows a scent trail across a field and indicates each dropped object, usually by lying down. At the top level the track runs at least 600 steps, laid by a stranger, and the dog starts an hour later. Nose and patience.
Obedience

The phase covers heeling, retrieves over a jump taller than three feet and a scaling wall, and a gunshot the dog must ignore. The exercise families should care about: the dog holds the down position alone at the far end of the field while another dog works.
Protection

Six hiding screens, called blinds, stand on the field. The dog searches two at the first level and all six at the third. It finds the helper (the person in padded gear playing the intruder) and barks instead of biting. The FCI, the sport's international federation, banned the padded stick hits from 1 January 2023. The current rulebook, in force since 1 January 2025, describes a threat only, and the stick never touches the dog. Pages describing two blows across the shoulders in IGP quote an expired rulebook.
The Arithmetic, and What Comes First
Call it a bite sport if you like, but the arithmetic disagrees. Each phase is marked out of 100, so a full trial is 300 points, and a dog needs at least 70 in every phase to pass, a minimum of 210. A dog that aces protection and fails tracking goes home without a title. Before any of that comes the BH-VT, a public behavior test: obedience and calm around strangers, dogs, traffic, and noise. USCA opens that test at 15 months. IGP 1 follows at 18 months, and the levels are earned in order.
What I Look for in a Pedigree

In the German system, looks alone do not clear a German Shepherd to breed. The SV, the breed's parent club in Germany, puts 3,000 to 4,000 dogs a year through the breed survey, the license that does. It judges temperament, performance, and anatomy. USCA publishes the checklist for its own survey: an IGP 1 or its older equivalent, a temperament test, an endurance test, a show rating, and certified hips and elbows. That is why I trust the parents behind the German Shepherds we place.
What a Schutzhund Title Does Not Prove
The sport is honest about its limits. A dog may bite one thing: the sleeve, the padded arm cover the helper wears. The FCI regulations are blunt: "In all protection exercises, the dog is allowed only to grip the provided protection sleeve." Biting anywhere else is instant disqualification.
The pattern is published too: six blinds in the same layout, marked positions, a scripted helper. A good dog learns the choreography, as in any judged sport. So a title is an excellent filter and a poor finish line. It tells me the raw material is sound. It does not tell me the dog will read a stranger at your gate. That is real protection training, where our own method starts.
FAQ
What is Schutzhund training?
Preparing a dog for a three-part trial in tracking, obedience, and protection, scored against a published rulebook. Every exercise is scripted.
Is Schutzhund the same as IGP?
Yes. The paperwork changed to IGP in 2019, with IPO in between. A SchH 3 and an IGP 3 are comparable.
Does a Schutzhund title mean a dog will protect my family?
No. The title proves nerve, obedience, and scenting ability in front of a judge. Home protection is separate work in unrehearsed situations.
Judge the Paperwork, Then Judge the Dog
A pedigree full of IGP titles is good news: a judge with no stake in the kennel signed off on the parents. It is still a starting point, not the dog. At Slovak Protection Dogs USA you meet the dog you are considering on a video call before anything is decided.
